Evelyn Kamagaju Rutagwenda

Non-executive Chairperson

Evelyn holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Makerere University, Kampala and is a Certified Public Accountant. She previously worked as the Auditor General for the Republic of Rwanda; as the Secretary General of Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UNCCI); consultant/project accountant for Decentralization Secretariat (Institutional Capacity Building Project); Ministry of Local Government, Uganda and also as Chief Auditor at UCA Auditing Services among others. Evelyn also spearheaded the formation of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Rwanda (ICPAR) and subsequently served the Institute in various capacities including, Chairperson of the Interim Governing Council, Ex Officio and elected member of the Governing Council. In 2009 she received an ACCA Achievements Award for her outstanding contribution to developing the accountancy and finance profession. She is currently the Chair-MTN Rwanda and Crystal Telecom Limited Boards of Directors, Vice-Chair, Board of Directors, Rwanda Development Board and also serves on the Board of Directors of Victoria Motors Rwanda.

Hannington holds a degree in Business Administration – Finance from Makerere University Business School. He is a Fellow of the fourth class of the Africa Leadership Initiative-East Africa, a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network and has received various trainings in corporate banking, credit, structured finance. He has over 15 years of experience as a Senior Private Sector Development specialist. He has extensive track record in Strategy, Leadership and Programme Management, Finance and Communications. He is currently the Managing Director of Equity Bank Rwanda. He has held various positions while working for TradeMark East Africa – Rwanda Country Programme, Rwanda Private Sector Federation, Commercial Bank of Rwanda (BCR), Rwanda Investment Export Promotion Agency (RIEPA-now known as Rwanda Development Board). He holds several positions of responsibility in Boards of Parastatals and Corporates.

Dr. Patrick Uwizeye

Patrick holds a degree of Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) from the Heriot-Watt Business School Edinburgh, UK, a Masters of Science (MSc) in Strategic Planning from the same University, a MBA in Financial Management from the University of Hull, UK and a Masters in Communications Management (MCM) from Coventry University, UK. He is also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a member of both Institutes of CPA Kenya and Rwanda; a Certified Member of the Institute of Risk Management (CMIRM), UK and Associate Member of Kenya Institute of Management. Patrick has over 28 years of working experience in business management working for MTN Rwanda and AACC in Nairobi. Currently, Patrick is the Managing Director of BPU Consulting Ltd, a company he founded.

Robert holds a BComs degree from Makerere University, Uganda. He has served as Chairman in several Investment and Trading companies and has a wealth of experience in entrepreneurship and business. He is currently the Managing Director of Acacia Developers Ltd, Rwanda.

Emmanuel Butare

Emmanuel holds a Master’s Degree in law from Ottawa University and a Bachelor of Laws from the National University of Rwanda. He also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in legal Practice from the Institute of Legal Practice and Development ( ILPD); A Membership Certificate from the London Institute of Chartered Arbitrators and a Certificate in Global Arbitration from Hamline University of Law in conjunction with School of International Arbitration, Queen Mary University in London. He worked as an assistant lecturer at the Law School, a Training coordinator in the Rwandan Judiciary and Principal State Attorney. He was part of the team that negotiated the launch of the Tripartite Free Trade Area negotiations between the EAC, COMESA and SADC. He served as a Vice President, East African Law Society (EALS) and President of the Strategic litigation committee of the EALS. He is a member of the Kigali International Arbitration Centre domestic Arbitrators and has handled several arbitrations. Robert is currently the Managing Partner and one of the founding Partners of MRB Attorneys.

Steve holds Master of Science in Engineering and Bachelor of Engineering degrees from Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. He has over 30 years’ experience in corporate governance, as an Executive Board Member of the two companies he founded and later as Chairman of Broadband Systems Corporation Ltd, KT Rwanda Networks Ltd, and the National Industrial Research and Development Agency as well as being a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Steve built his entrepreneurial business career in Australia and the Asia Pacific region. He founded and led two technology innovation companies for 20 years. He also held senior positions with Telstra Corporation (Australia) and Hewlett Packard Company.

In 2012, he joined the Rwanda Development Board, where for over 6 years, he led the Government’s effort to develop the country’s ICT sector. He led the establishment of the Government’s joint venture with KT Corporation for the rollout of 4G LTE covering 95% of the population by 2017 and developed Kigali Innovation City flagship initiative.

Mary holds a Master’s degree in Leading Innovation and Change from York St. John University, UK, a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi and a Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law. She is a graduate of Advanced Management Programme (Strathmore - IESE Business School, Barcelona Spain) and Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School.

She is a Certified Public Secretary (Kenya) and member of The Institute of Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya (ICPSK), Law Society of Kenya, Women Corporate Directors and the Kenya Section of International Commission of Jurists. She is a graduate of Advanced Management Programme (Strathmore - IESE Business School, Barcelona Spain) and Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School. She is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Gender and Development and has over 15 years’ experience in private legal practice.

James holds five honorary doctorate degrees in recognition of his positive impact to the Kenyan society. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree and is a Certified Public Accountant. He has been honoured thrice with National Presidential Awards: The First Class Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear (CBS), the Moran of the Burning Spear (MBS) and Head of State Commendation (HSC).

On the global front, he has won several awards including the G8 Global Vision Award, 2007. He was named among the Top 50 Emerging Market Business Leaders and the 20 most influential people in Africa in 2011; the World Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young in 2012; the Forbes Africa Person of the Year in 2012 and was recently named in the Bloomberg 50 list of people who defined 2019 globally. He is an honoree of the 2020 Oslo Business for Peace Award, also described as the ‘Nobel Prize for Business’.

On the regional front, James was also recognized as the Africa Investor Awards, CEO of the Year in 2009 and 2015; Innovation Leader of the Year in 2012; African Business Leader of the Year in 2013 and African Banker of the Year in 2010, 2011 and 2017 at the African Banker Awards. He was also named the Banker of the Year during the Banker Africa (East Africa) Awards in 2017 and 2018, and named African CEO of the year by the African Business Leadership 2020 Awards. Locally, he has received the Think Business CEO of the Year award for the last 4 years.

James has served on board and advisory roles at the Global Advisory Council for VISA Inc., the Clinton Global Initiative, The G8 New Alliance For Food Security And Nutrition, US President Barack Obama’s Initiative for Global Development, the G20 Advisory Board of Agriculture and Initiative for Global Development and The Global Agenda Council on New Economic Thinking of the World Economic Forum from 2003-2007. He also served as the Founding Chair of Kenya’s Vision 2030 from inception in 2007 to 2019.

He currently serves on several international bodies as an advisor and was appointed to the Nairobi Advisory Board of Columbia Global Centres. He is a member of the continent-wide PACT initiative, a Board member of the Economic Advisory Board of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), The Mastercard MEA Advisory Board, the Africa Leadership Academy in South Africa, the Global Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition. He is also a guest lecturer at Stanford, Columbia, MIT, Harvard, IESE and Lagos Business School where Equity Bank Business Model is a case study. Locally, he is the Chancellor of Meru University College of Science and Technology and the Chairman of the Health Committee of Kenya COVID-19 Fund Board.

James holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Sociology from Egerton University. He has over 20 years’ experience in Treasury business having worked as a treasury dealer for Co-operative Bank of Kenya, Head of Money Markets and Fixed Income at KCB Kenya and the East Africa Head of Asset Liability Management (ALM) for Standard Chartered Bank Kenya. Before joining Equity Bank, he was the immediate country Head of Financial Markets for Standard Chartered Bank Uganda, where he also doubled up as the Co-Head SCB Uganda Wholesale Bank. He brings a wealth of experience in balance sheet management, fixed income trading and general treasury management. He joined Equity Bank in 2016.

Athanasie holds a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration/Marketing from National University of Rwanda and a Masters degree in Leadership from Oklahoma Christian University. Prior to joining Equity Bank, Athanasie worked in marketing and sales roles in Agaseke Bank, Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB /Rwanda), The Edge Ltd and Rwandatel SA.

Fernand holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economic Sciences and Management from Kigali Independent University (ULK) and is an ACI certified dealer. Prior to joining Equity Bank Rwanda Ltd, Fernand worked in Access Bank Rwanda Ltd for 5years in various positions including Team Leader Treasury 2011 – August 2013, Acting Treasurer 2010 -2011 and Card & Channels Officer 2008 - 2010.

Chantal holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Accounting option and pursuing Master’s Degree in Business Administration University of South Wales, UK.Prior to joining Equity Bank 5 years ago, Chantal worked at the Commercial Bank of Rwanda (now I&M) in Credit Department for more than 11 years; As an Analyst in SME and Corporate Banking, Security Perfection Manager, Personal Lending and Mortgages Manager.

Joseph holds an MBA Finance option from Jomo kenyatta University of Agriculture and technology and a bachelor’s of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Nairobi. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA K) and a Certified Securities and Investments Analyst (CSIA). He is currently pursuing the Chartered Financial Analyst certification-CFA. Prior to joining Equity Bank Rwanda Ltd, Joseph worked as a senior accountant at Equity Bank Kenya Limited.

Jean Paul holds a degree in Business Administration-Accounting Sciences from National University of Rwanda (now UR). He is ACCA certified, a member of The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Rwanda (ICPAR) and a member The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA). He has over 12 years of experience in Audit with 10 years spent in Internal audit in Banking Industry. He joined Equity Bank Rwanda Plc in April 2020 as Head of Internal Audit. He has previously worked for BPR Bank (an Atlas Mara subsidiary) for over 2.5 years as Senior Audit Manager; I&M Bank Rwanda Plc as Senior Internal Auditor for 7 years and Auditors General’s Office of Rwanda as Auditor of Public Business Enterprises for 2 years.

Carole holds an MBA from the University of Nicosia in Cyprus, a MIT from the University of Pretoria, a BCOM Honor’s degree for the same University, and a BA from Adventist University of Central Africa.

Having lived in different countries, Carole has gained a diverse range of experiences in Telecoms, Investments, Construction, Security services, Building materials, Insurance brokerage, _as well as in Food and Beverage and Agribusiness. She is fluent In English, French, Swahili and Kinyarwanda. Her IT acumen and leadership make her a great asset of any organization she relates too.

Carole is a passionate IT specialist with nearly 20 years of experience. She has specialized herself as a Solution Architecture who conceptualizes, designs and implements IT Strategies and Solutions that drive innovation, businesses efficiency and continuity in different areas of operations.  She had achieved automation of different business processes, allowing companies to focus on their core businesses and concentrate on turning companies into profitable business. She has also managed and delivered various IT projects that require integration of various Vendors and Solutions following IT standards and Processes like PMP, COBIT and ITIL. She is currently working on various digitization projects that embody cybersecurity, mobility and data analytics.

She enjoys reading, travelling and innovating. She is also engaged in various benevolent causes that empower children and women.

Carole is currently Head of IT at Equity Bank Rwanda where she oversees the digital transformation of the bank and runs different Business projects. Prior to that she was the Group IT Director of Crystal Ventures for 8 years and IT Project manager and Solution Architect of MTN Rwanda.

She also serves in different Boards as a Non-Executive Director.

Aline holds a degree in Business Administration from Université de Mons – Hainaut (Belgium University), with more than 10 years’ experience in Human Resources Management. She has previously worked for Bralirwa (a Heineken subsidiary) and U-COM Burundi. She joined Equity Bank in July 2017 as head of HR and Administration.

Bizimungu Jean Nepomuscene holds a bachelor’s degree in Monetary economics from Former National University of Rwanda and he holds an International certificate in Enterprise Risk Management from Institute of Risk Management in United Kingdom (IRM) and He is CAMs certified & ACCPA certified. He is a member of the Institute of Institute of Risk Management UK and a member of ACAMs. He has 8 years’ experience in banking industry specifically in Risk and compliance management.
