After two painful setbacks that threatened to derail their campaign, Equity Volleyball Club has chosen resilience over retreat at the 47th CAVB Africa Volleyball Club Championship in Kigali, Rwanda. Losses can either break a team or build it. For Equity, they became a turning point.
Stepping onto the court at Petit Stade with their backs against the wall, the Kenyan side knew there was no margin for error. Their response was emphatic. A composed 3-1 victory over Injs of Côte d’Ivoire reignited their campaign, breathing new life into their hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
From the first whistle, Equity played with renewed purpose. Their defense tightened, their attacks carried sharper intent, and their communication reflected a team that had learned quickly from its earlier mistakes. The scars of the opening losses were still fresh, but instead of weighing them down, they fueled a visible shift in belief.
Riding on the confidence of their comeback, Equity followed it up with another gritty 3-1 victory, this time over Cameroon Sports (25-22, 25-22, 20-25, 25-22) in Pool B. The back-to-back wins have now firmly placed them back on course, strengthening their push for a place in the Round of 16.
Equity executed a well organized defensive strategy, with solid blocking and improved reception forming the backbone of their performance. In crucial moments, they remained calm, closing out sets with composure and maturity.
Head coach Patrick credited the turnaround to deliberate adjustments after a difficult start. “We took time to plan for these matches because we had a false start in the first two games. This was a do-or-die situation for the team,” he said, highlighting the importance of their defensive solidity and improved blocking.
Equity players have embraced the lessons from those early defeats. Outside hitter Elisha Siret pointed to growth in key areas such as reception, serving, and overall energy on the court. “We struggled in our first matches, especially with blocks and serves, but through the guidance of our coaches, we have managed to bounce back. There’s a big improvement in how we are playing now,” he noted.
Speaking after the second victory, Equity Sports Coordinator Nick praised the team’s performance. “The boys showed up after two setbacks, and have made one loud statement: ‘we’re still here.’”
With one pool match remaining against a Rwandan side backed by home support, Equity knows the challenge ahead will be just as demanding. However, belief has been restored within the squad.
Speaking on the sidelines, Coach Patrick expressed continued confidence in his team, saying, “We have a plan for the challenge ahead, and I believe we’ll overcome it and progress to the next round in a stronger position.”
In a tournament defined by fine margins and relentless pressure, Equity Volleyball Club has rediscovered its identity at the perfect time. Two losses tested their resolve, but two victories have reaffirmed their ambition.
