Equity Inspire Programme (Equip) Launched At Equity Centre In Nairobi

EQUIP was launched on March 11th, 2020 during a colourful celebration of International Women’s Day, held at Equity Centre in Nairobi where women staff, donning white EQUIP branded blouses with purple ribbons pinned on their lapels were welcomed to a hearty breakfast and rich program of speakers, presentations and videos. The event was also attended by members of the Equity Group Board of Directors as well as senior members of the executive team and select Equity customers and guests.

Equity Group Executive Director and founding patron of EQUIP, Mary Wamae speaks to 700 staff during the launch of the programme.

EQUIP is led by the Group Executive Director Mary Wamae. Speaking at the launch Wamae explained why gender equality is an essential ingredient for the success of corporations and communities. “Equity has a long history of supporting women and EQUIP is the clarion call for a cause that has already taken root,” she said, adding: “I am giving my personal commitment that next year when we met here, we will be celebrating progress.” EQUIP is a 360-degree intervention strategy encompassing leadership development, mentorship, coaching and capacity building among staff to prepare them for career development.

“EQUIP aims to further Equity’s empowerment agenda by taking EQUIP’s activities further and   incorporating their ideals into operational strategies. The program will identify high potential talent and provide encouragement and coaching programs that will support women towards ascending to the senior ranks of Equity,” added Mary.

Equity Group Managing Director & CEO Dr. James Mwangi addresses the guests.

Dr. Mwangi outlined the areas where equality has been achieved, such as on the Group Board. He also noted that there is the need to keep the leadership development pipeline moving at every level.  “Why are we taking this issue so seriously? Because this is not a gender issue; it is a strategic issue.

Organizations that achieve parity are happier and healthier because everyone is represented. Beyond Equity, this country needs women to emerge as great leaders. To ensure that we inspire leadership in women, today we are launching the EQUIP programme. I appeal to all women to take advantage of this initiative,” he said.

Some of the initiatives Equity has implemented over the years include a fully-kitted lactation room at the Head Office, a safe and secure working environment through speak-up champions, a whistle blowing system for third party reporting and counselling and policies enriched to provide flexible working hours for mothers reporting from maternity leave.
