KINSHASA, (June 25, 2020) - Equity Bank Congo has released 1 million US dollars (nearly 2 billion Congolese francs) to support the government's national efforts to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the country. The donation includes $ 500,000 donated by the family of Dr James MWANGI, Chairman and CEO of Equity Group Holdings Plc. The contribution will be used to provide personal protective equipment (PPE) for health workers in public hospitals taking care of COVID-19 cases.

Since the detection of the first positive case of COVID-19 in Kinshasa in March 2020, the country has faced continued spread of the virus in several provinces, with more than 6,000 cases reported. This health crisis has caused an unprecedented, complex and multifaceted global crisis and has exacerbated the structural and socio-economic difficulties of the world economy, including that of the DRC.

In order to curb the spread of COVID-19, the President of the Republic, His Excellency Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, called for national solidarity and the involvement of all actors to slow the spread of this pandemic.

Announcing the Bank's contribution, the Managing Director of Equity Bank Congo, Célestin MUKEBA, declared: "Indeed, the medical staff are engaged, with dedication and efficiency in this fight. Thanks to their patriotic commitment, the propagation of the COVID-19 has been slowed down and severe cases have been limited. They have answered the call to take their oath for our safety. We honor them for their heroic work. "

Sending his family's donation to increase Equity Bank Congo's contribution, Dr Mwangi said: “My family is honored to have the opportunity to join Equity Bank Congo to support the government's efforts in the fight against Corona virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo. We are convinced that, united for the same goal and in partnership with our respective governments, we will overcome this pandemic. Equity Bank Congo adheres to government health protocols in the fight against this disease. In these difficult times, the Bank has made it easier for its customers to access
banking services in a safe and secure 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, thanks to its digital channels and its network of more than 3,000 banking agents ( cash express).

The Bank has implemented health protocols in all of its branches and offices to protect its staff and clients. These protocols include a temperature control at the entrance of each branch. Any customer or staff member with an elevated temperature is advised to seek medical attention immediately. In addition, the Bank has put in place a system for washing hands regularly with soap and water, as well as for using disinfectants in all its premises. Customers are required to wear masks when in the bank.

Equity Bank Congo has set up exceptional support systems for customers facing the Covid-19 crisis and invites its customers to use the Digital platform made available to them to carry out their banking transactions.
