Dr. James Mwangi, Chief Executive of Equity Group, has been awarded the honorable Freedom of the City of London, one of the world's oldest civic awards. This award celebrates his dedication to financial inclusion, equitable economic development, and the empowerment of disadvantaged communities across the African continent.

He joins a prestigious list of previously honored global figures, such as Nelson Mandela, Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher, Benjamin Franklin, and Lee Kuan Yew. A dinner in his honor was held, attended by friends, partners, and members of the Kenyan government, including the Honourable Lee Kinyanjui, Minister of Trade, Kenyan Ambassador to the United Kingdom Catherine Wahome, and Lord Jonathan Marland, Chairman of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Mwangi said: “This honor reaffirms that meaningful leadership has the power to transform lives, unlock potential, and restore dignity to communities. It is also a global recognition that Africa’s time has come—our stories, our innovations, and our people matter on the world stage.” The honor, which dates back to the 12th century, has been awarded to figures such as Desmond Tutu, Otto von Habsburg, Bill Gates, and Sir Tim Berners-Lee. It recognizes individuals whose contributions have had a global impact, in the areas of leadership, innovation, or community service. Beyond his role as head of one of Africa's most influential financial groups, Dr. Mwangi actively participates in global discussions on inclusive growth. He is Chairman of the CWEIC East and Central Africa Hub, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations' Global Board of Advisors, and a member of the World Bank's Jobs Advisory Council. He also founded the Equity Group Foundation (EGF) in 2008 to structure the group's social initiatives: education, entrepreneurship, health, clean energy, innovation, and agriculture.

Under his leadership, the Foundation has transformed millions of lives:

• 60,009 Wings to Fly and Elimu scholarships for bright, disadvantaged children.

• 29,515 university admissions through the Equity Leadership Program (ELP). • 970 international scholarship recipients, including 204 at Ivy League universities.

• 3.3 million medical consultations through Equity Afya clinics.

• 466,975 clean energy products distributed.

• 35 million trees planted.

• 2.47 million youth and women trained in financial education through FiKA.

• 5.79 million beneficiaries of social protection programs.

He has also personally contributed to educational and health projects:

• USD 1 million for an innovation center at Meru University

• USD 500,000 for his former high school

• USD 300,000 to the Africa Leadership Academy

• USD 4 million for COVID-19 relief efforts

Dr. Mwangi has previously been recognized with the Oslo Business for Peace Award, the Bloomberg 50, the Lifetime Achievement Award by CNBC Africa and Forbes Africa, and was named Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur of the Year in 2012.

This award reinforces Equity's image as a movement for socioeconomic transformation rather than a traditional bank, linking financial inclusion, education, health, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development.

It also symbolizes a bridge between Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States, founded on shared values: dignity, freedom, innovation, and inclusion.
